Most people think of Portugal as a summer paradise, which it absolutely is. What you might not know, however, is that winter is actually the best time to surf in Portugal. Fewer people in the water, more powerful waves, and a milder climate make this season perfect for both beginners and experienced surfers.

When is the best time to surf in Portugal?

In general, autumn and winter (October–March) are by far the best seasons for surfing in Portugal. During these months, consistent Atlantic swells roll in regularly, creating reliable waves all along the coast. If you’re looking for fewer crowds, sunny days, and steady surf, winter in Portugal is unbeatable.

Where to surf in Portugal?

Portugal offers surf spots for every level. In Baleal, just outside Peniche, where we at Magnus & Friends Surfcamp are based, you’ll find some of the country’s most versatile beaches. Our peninsula provides unique conditions all year round, thanks to its sheltered bays. This means you can almost always find the perfect wave, no matter the wind direction or swell.

For beginners, there are mellow spots like Cantinho da Baía and Prainha, while more experienced surfers often head to Supertubos – famous for its powerful barrels.

That’s why Baleal is one of the best places to surf in Portugal, especially during winter, when the conditions are consistent and the lineup is less crowded.

How are the waves for surfing in Portugal during the winter?

The waves in Portugal during winter are often bigger and more powerful, thanks to stronger Atlantic low-pressure systems. However, because Portugal has both exposed and sheltered coastlines, you can always find surf that matches your level. The biggest waves in Portugal arrive between November and February — that’s when you’ll see the iconic waves of Nazaré.
