Many people think winter surfing in Portugal means cold, gloomy weather and less enjoyable conditions – but it’s quite the opposite. Winter in Baleal brings plenty of great surf days, sunshine, and pleasant weather!

Surf & Work is available from December to February, excluding Christmas and New Year.

Transer
For a comfortable experience to and from our Lodge, you can add our transfer service on your arrival and departure days. Our transfer times are: Arrival day: 09:00–19:00 Departure day: 10:00–20:00 The round-trip transfer costs SEK 990 per adult and SEK 590 per child and can be booked online.
Sunrise surf
Start your day in the most magical way, with a sunrise surf session together as a family. As the sky changes colour and the sun rises over the ocean, you’ll paddle out together with our instructors and catch the first waves of the day. After your surf, freshly brewed coffee and a warm Pastel de Nata await you on the beach. Our surf photographer will be there to capture the moments, so you can hold on to the feeling long after your holiday is over. Our Sunrise Surf can be booked on site for SEK 715 or online for SEK 695.
Private surflesson
Can’t get enough of surfing and want to take your skills to the next level? Book a private lesson with one of our instructors and enjoy two hours of personalised coaching with our full attention. A private lesson costs SEK 985 and can be booked on site.
Massage
Give your body some well-deserved rest and book a massage for some extra relaxation and recovery. We work with a local massage therapist who knows exactly how to help you relax and unwind. A treatment costs SEK 715 and can be booked on site.
How is the weather in winter?
“But doesn’t it rain all the time in winter?” Not at all! Of course, there might be the occasional shower, just like back home, but winter in Baleal often means sunny days and pleasant temperatures of around 15–20°C in the shade – and it feels much warmer when the sun is out.
It often feels more like early Swedish summer than winter. And with almost twice as many hours of sunshine as Stockholm, a winter in Baleal is a pretty good way to escape the darkness and recharge your batteries.
Activities
Big waves in Nazaré
Keep an eye on the waves in Nazaré! Just a 50-minute drive from Baleal, you’ll find the legendary Praia do Norte, famous for the huge swells that roll in between November and March.
If you’re lucky, you might catch a day when some of the world’s best big wave surfers are out there taking them on – an incredible sight to see in person.
Up by the lighthouse, there’s also a small museum dedicated to the history of big wave surfing, perfect if you want to learn more about Nazaré and the waves that made it famous.
Climb in Peniche
Looking for another challenge? In Peniche, you’ll find a climbing centre where you can test your skills on the wall and take a fun break from surfing.
It’s a great way to mix up your days, try something different, and keep your body active even when you’re out of the water.
Spa in Praia D’El Rey
Want to take a break from surfing and work for some extra recovery? Just a short trip away, Praia D’El Rey offers relaxing spa treatments, warm pools, and a peaceful setting – the perfect contrast to days spent in the waves.
